Chapter Twenty-Three

“I really don’t think you should go!” Timothy was outraged at the thought of his grandmother leaving to go gallivanting across the country on a whim. Of course she had not enlightened him as to the real reason for her trip. Instead she had led him to believe, without being specific, that she wished to pay a visit to an old friend who was sick and likely to die. It was the truth; apart from the ‘friend’. Was he a friend? How could she be friends with the man who had treated her sister so damnably?

“You’re sick yourself Grandmother,” he railed and then added, “I’m coming with you.” The declaration was met with a refusal, “No Timothy, I’m afraid you can’t, not this time. Elsa will take care of me and I will be back in no time at all. Don’t upset yourself, you know what might happen if you become over stressed.”

Timothy was further incensed by this remark. It was almost taboo to mention his ‘problem’ in his hearing. He was determined to ignore any suggestion that he was anything but perfect in every way and as he grew into adulthood, those he loved understood that he dealt with his malady by accepting it as part of normality. Therefore, any specific references to stress or tension and their possible or even probably consequences were forbidden. He slammed out of the room and thundered up the stairs to his room calling back, “Don’t blame me if it all goes wrong then!” Eleanor smiled ruefully to herself and continued to make preparations for her visit. She wasn’t at all sure what to expect but she knew that Elsa would look after her and all would become clear in due course.

He really couldn’t explain why he felt so strongly. It was just an overwhelming feeling of dread. Something terribly wrong and something was about to change, perhaps irrevocably. He buried his head in Snowball’s fur and took comfort from the soft pink tongue that washed his face. The aging dog spent most of his days curled asleep on Timothy’s bed. A truce was called between him and Peanut who similarly slept on the blanket box placed beneath the window and next to a radiator. Thomas had long since moved into the spare room across the hall, but Peanut preferred the sunny side of the house and only ventured into his master’s room at night.

After a while, and sighing deeply, Timothy scrambled off the bed, smoothed the counterpane and made his way downstairs to apologise for his outspokenness. Instead of his grandmother, he found Elsa folding up the last of Eleanor’s discarded garments and putting them carefully away in the chest of drawers. She took one look at his drawn face and invited him to come in, sit down and chat.

“I don’t know what the matter is with me at the moment,” he began, “my head’s all over the place and I just keep feeling so angry with everything and everyone. It’s like I can’t control anything anymore.
